NRC Mgt. Commends Lagos Govt for Support in Carter-Railway Drainage Chanel Construction

Managing Director of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has commended Lagos State Government for the initiative to support the Corporation in the construction of Carter-Railway Drainage Channel.
Opeifa expressed the satisfaction at a stakeholders’ meeting which was held at the Railway premises in Lagos where officials of Lagos State Government disclosed that a contract has been awarded for the construction of the Carter Railway Channel (System 4) within Lagos Mainland Local Government Area.
The NRC leader assured Lagos State Government that the Corporation will cooperate with the government to ensure the successful execution of the project which is in billions of Naira.
The State Government declared that it will support Nigerian Railway Corporation in the construction of Carter-Railway Drainage Channel to deflood the entire Ebute Metta Railway Compound, as well as part of Olaleye and adjourning communities.
The management of NRC disclosed the development on 3rd February, 2026 in a statement titled: “LASG Supports NRC and Railway Compound Residents with Storm Drainage Construction.”
The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NRC, Callistus Unyimadu, explained in the statement that the project involves the construction of a reinforced concrete drainage channel running from Murtala Muhammed Way, Ebute Metta through the Nigerian Railway Corporation corridor to a confluence point at Iponri on Western Avenue.
The Director of Drainage Services in the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Engr. Adedapo Ajadi, while briefing stakeholders about the project said it will permanently resolve the perennial flooding that has been a major menace to the residents of NRC Compound and adjoining communities.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Nigerian Railway Corporation and other tenants which include: St. Saviours School, CCECC quarters, NRC staff quarters, NTA Channel 10 Compound, churches, mosques, NRC stations, locomotive yards, the Railway Museum, the Federal Medical Centre, and FMC Cancer Hospital both at Ebute Metta, Mainland Local Government and Ojez Limited. Others are manufacturing and industrial concerns.
Furthermore, Ajadi who led a four-man delegation from Lagos State Ministry of Environment to the meeting appealled to the management of Nigerian Railway Corporation to ensure maximum cooperation during the duration of the construction which he said would be about 18 months.
