Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has set up a committee for the demolition of the burnt high rise Great Nigeria Insurance House in Balogun area of Lagos Island.
The governor stated this when he went to inspect the site of the fire on Thursday.
He announced that nobody died in the fire, and said that those who were injured have been rushed to hospital for treatment.
The governor expressed sorrow over the fire outbreak that razed parts of Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island, and assured that affected traders and businesses that the state government will support them.
“I am deeply saddened by the fire incident that occurred yesterday at the Great Nigeria House. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy,” Sanwo-Olu said.
A fire incident erupted on Wednesday at a high-rise commercial building on Lagos Island, triggering a rapid emergency response from several fire stations across the state.
Describing the scale of destruction, Sanwo-Olu pointed out that the impact of the incident went beyond what could be captured in official documents.
“I went to Balogun today for an on-the-spot assessment to better understand the situation. No written report can truly reflect the pain or the full extent of this loss,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu commended firefighters, emergency responders and relevant agencies for their swift intervention, saying their efforts prevented further damage and loss of life.
“I want to thank our firefighters, emergency responders, and all the agencies that worked tirelessly through the night to bring the fire under control,” the governor said. “Their courage and dedication saved lives and prevented the damage from spreading further.”
He assured residents and business owners affected by the inferno that the state government would continue to evaluate the situation and extend necessary assistance.
“We will continue to assess the situation and provide support to those who have been impacted. Lagos has always shown strength in difficult moments, and I believe we will get through this together,” Sanwo-Olu said.
